The East Asian War, 1592-1598: International relations, violence, and memory of the Imjin Waeran (壬辰倭亂)

James Lewis University Lecturer in Korean History, Oriental Studies, University of Oxford The Imjin War (1592-97) was the only East Asian War between 1400 to 1937 that involved Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, and even Europeans in conflict. It is little studied in the West, but it offers us a multitude of lessons for East Asian international relations, identity politics, and even gender relations that are relevant in the present and into the future.
